Director of Design

  • The Work

    You will serve as the bridge between strategy and creative execution, translating strategic direction into visual guidance, ensuring concepts are executed cohesively, and upholding the quality of creative output across campaigns, content, digital assets, and production design. You will also lead the design team day-to-day, developing talent and maintaining systems that keep a high-volume design operation productive and healthy.

    This role balances creative excellence with operational leadership, ensuring work moves efficiently, consistently, and with a high bar for quality.

    Our design team is comprised of creatives with varying skillsets giving us creative horsepower in blank page creative, production work, multiple formats and plenty of mediums including print pieces, websites, digital ads, emails, social content, video assets and more.  There are very few areas of graphic design we can't handle.

You will serve as the bridge between strategy and creative execution, translating strategic direction into visual guidance, ensuring concepts are executed cohesively, and upholding the quality of creative output across campaigns, content, digital assets, and production design. You will also lead the design team day-to-day, developing talent and maintaining systems that keep a high-volume design operation productive and healthy.

  • Core Reponsibilities

    The Head / Director of Design leads AMC’s design discipline, owning the creative standards, team performance, and operational systems that ensure all visual work is clear, on-brand, and strategically aligned.

    Creative Leadership & Quality Ownership

    • Set the creative vision and standards for all design work across AMC.
    • Translate strategic direction into clear visual guidance and ensure creative aligns to messaging, campaign logic, and brand guidelines.
    • Review concepts, iterations, and deliverables and provide clear, actionable feedback.
    • Provide art direction for campaigns, landing pages, digital assets, presentations, and production materials.
    • Serve as the quality gate and ensure brand consistency across all creative deliverables.

     

    Team Leadership, Coaching & Development

    • Lead and develop a team of art directors and designers.
    • Set priorities, review work, and ensure the team meets quality, clarity, and delivery expectations.
    • Deliver regular coaching and feedback to elevate design craft and performance.
    • Build a strong creative culture grounded in clarity, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
    • Support hiring, onboarding, and future capability planning.
    • Introduce evolving design technologies, including AI-enhanced workflows, to improve efficiency and support team development.

     

    Operational Management & Workflow Optimization

    • Own the operational health of the design team, including workload balance, workflow consistency, and quality control.
    • Partner with Project Management to ensure work is scoped correctly, resourced appropriately, and delivered on time.
    • Establish best practices, templates, and design systems that create efficiency and consistency.
    • Ensure the team has the tools, processes, and training needed to deliver work at scale.
    • Define how design integrates with Strategy, Digital, and Interactive Media for smooth cross-functional execution.
    • Evaluate and integrate new design tools, automation features, and AI-assisted processes that streamline production and improve consistency.

    Cross-Functional Collaboration

    • Work closely with client teams to align creative direction with campaign goals and audience insight.
    • Partner with Interactive Media when design intersects with motion, animation, or digital experience.
    • Provide Design requirements and feedback to Digital when creative affects performance.
    • Support Account Managers with creative explanations when needed — without stepping into relationship ownership.
    • Collaborate with PMs to ensure dependencies, approvals, and timelines are understood and followed.

    Hands-On Creative Execution

    • Step into design or art direction directly for priority campaigns, complex deliverables, or high-visibility client work.
    • Provide elevated creative concepts or refinements during critical moments or high-priority projects.
    • Ensure complex or ambiguous creative work is guided with clarity and direction.

  • What You Bring

    Must Haves

    • Deep expertise in visual design, including brand systems, campaign creative, digital layouts, typography, and production design.
    • Strong art direction and feedback skills with the ability to guide both concept and execution.
    • Experience optimizing workflows, managing capacity, and building scalable processes.
    • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite; familiarity with Figma or similar tools.
    • Strong communication skills and ability to explain creative decisions to non-designers.


    Nice-to-Haves

    • Familiarity with telecom, B2B, or technology-driven industries.
    • Exposure to motion, interactive, or UX teams (not required, but valuable for cross-team collaboration).
    • Ability to support or critique UX concepts during website redesigns.

    • The design team consistently delivers high-quality, strategically aligned creative with fewer revisions and clearer rationale.
    • Strategy and Design collaborate seamlessly, reducing friction and increasing clarity.
    • Workflows and processes are consistent, predictable, and scalable across all clients.
    • Designers grow in their craft, confidence, and output quality.
    • Account Managers and Project Managers see the design team as reliable, structured, and easy to work with.
    • Creative quality elevates AMC’s reputation and competitive positioning.

  • Education & Experience
    • 8-10+ years of professional design experience, including agency experience.
    • 3–5+ years leading a design team (manager, director, or equivalent).

Full-time.  This is not an entry-level role.
